Seguin Township staff and Council gathered outside of the Municipal Office this morning to raise the Pride flag in honour of Pride Month. This was a first for Seguin Township.
“This is a gesture that represents Seguin Township’s ongoing and evolving commitment to creating a culture that is welcoming and inclusive for all, whether you work for the Township, live in the Township, or are visiting,” Mayor Ann MacDiarmid told the group.
“Pride Month is a time to celebrate inclusion and diversity and resist homophobia and transphobia in all forms. It is also a time to check in with ourselves and remember the importance of friendship and support, not just this month, but all year. I’m proud to be a part of this inaugural flag raising and appreciate your show of support by joining us here today.”
The progress Pride flag will fly at the Seguin Township Municipal Office and at the Humphrey Community Centre throughout June. It includes black and brown stripes to represent marginalized LGBTQ+ communities of colour, along with the colours pink, light blue and white, which are used on the transgender Pride flag.
Humphrey Public School will also raise the Pride flag for the first time, further enhancing the message that the Seguin Township community values inclusion and celebrates diversity.
“It’s great to feel included and to have our presence acknowledged,” says longtime resident Jamie Lapoint, who attended the event. “We’ve always felt this is a welcoming community and this gesture reinforces that.”
