Seguin Township Council passed an enhanced noise by-law and a new nuisance by-law at their April 3 meeting as part of a broader objective to improve quality of life in the area.
The enhanced noise by-law expands on the previous noise by-law with specific regulations now in place for several behaviours, including operating construction equipment, squealing vehicle tires, and setting off fireworks after 11pm (with exceptions on New Year’s Eve). Maximum fines are also higher under this new by-law.
While Council had questions about potentially tightening regulations related to the frequency and duration of amplified noise, particularly from commercial operations, they agreed to pass the proposed noise by-law and evaluate its effectiveness after the summer.
The approved nuisance by-law is the first of its kind in Seguin Township and will regulate unruly behaviours and disturbances often associated with large parties and gatherings.
These new by-laws will help to create consistency between Seguin Township and neighbouring municipalities and are part of the by-law department’s vision to better support sustainable environmental and community practices.
The By-law Services Department also drew Council’s attention to their two-year work plan, a new online complaint portal and Seguin Township web pages that were recently redesigned to improve clarity about by-laws and processes.
“These efforts are intended to provide clear and reasonable guidelines to protect the peace and tranquility of our region while also ensuring residents and visitors are able to enjoy their downtime with family and friends,” says Seguin Township CAO Jason Inwood. “I am confident that our expanded team of by-law professionals, equipped with these new by-laws and a clear workplan, will achieve this balance.”
