Seguin Township is hosting its annual Sled Dog Mail Run this Saturday, February 19. The beloved, free event is back after a hiatus due to the pandemic. While this year’s festivities will be more subdued, and held entirely outdoors, the excitement is as high as ever.
“This event is all about having some classic winter fun and connecting community,” says Dominique O’Brien, Seguin Township’s Director of Community Services. “Everyone has a smile on their face, from the dogs to the cheering fans. We encourage everyone to come out and experience it for themselves!”
The itinerary for the day is:
9:30 a.m. Opening ceremonies at Humphrey Community Centre with remarks from MPP Norm Miller and MP Scott Aitchison
10:00 a.m. Sled dog teams depart from the Humphrey Community Centre
11:30 a.m. Sled dog teams begin to cross the finish line in Rosseau (Victoria Street West)
This year, six teams will participate in the 17-kilometre adventure through Seguin’s forests and lakes on groomed trails. Residents can set up at the start and finish lines or along the trails to cheer on the teams.
About the Mail Run: The Seguin Sled Dog Mail Run is a 37-year tradition that has welcomed teams from across North America. Local residents purchase special issue, hand-stamped envelopes that include a letter about the event and information on a featured participant; this year it’s Mark Clements from Northern Paws Kennel of Chatsworth, Ontario. Some residents also include personalized notes in the “sledvelopes” which are delivered by the dog teams to be received by the Postmaster at the finish line where they continue their journey through Canada Post. Over the years, these “sledvelopes” have travelled from the quaint community of Seguin to nearly every continent and have become collectors’ items for enthusiasts around the world.
The Humphrey Community Centre is located at 15 Humphrey Drive Seguin, ON P2A 2W8
