Borrowing items from Seguin Public Libraries will be even more enjoyable in 2022! Seguin Public Libraries will no longer charge late fees for overdue items, effective February 1, 2022.
The library board made the decision to eliminate late fees in December. The shift is in step with libraries across North America aiming to make services more equitable and accessible while increasing administrative efficiencies.
“We’re very excited about this important step,” says Stefanie Veneranda, CEO of Seguin Public Libraries. “Residents have pretty full plates without having the stress of worrying about late fees. We want visiting the library to be as barrier-free as possible. We know that owing money can discourage residents from returning to the library and we want everyone to be excited and inspired about coming through our doors.”
Research shows that users return books sooner to libraries without late fees. Existing late fees have also been waived under this new policy. Eliminating late fees isn’t expected to have a serious impact on wait lists for popular titles. Most library items will now be checked out for a three-week time period and can be renewed for another three weeks, with a maximum of two renewals, unless an item has been requested by another user.
Users will be billed for the replacement costs of items that are lost or not returned.
