Safety Reminders as first significant snow event of the season arrives

Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a snow squall warning for our region.  The forecast is calling for very poor visibility at times, heavy snowfall (with accumulations possibly exceeding 75 cm by Sunday afternoon), and local blowing snow.

As winter sets in, Seguin Township staff and Seguin Fire Services are reminding residents to be prepared for a variety of winter weather-related challenges in the coming months, including ongoing periods of hydro outages, road, and facility closures, as well as shelter-in-place orders. 

Please remember: 

• There is no parking on Seguin Township roads during the winter at any time. Parking on Township roads can hinder maintenance as snowplows need space to operate safely and effectively.  
• Every household should have an emergency kit on hand with enough essential supplies for at least 72 hours without services and power. These supplies include non-perishable food, water, medication, flashlights, and batteries. Visit Ontario.ca for a full list of recommended items.   
• Municipalities can declare a “Significant Weather Event” (SWE) when conditions are hazardous, which suspends Minimum Maintenance Standards (MMS) timelines. During these events, crews are dispatched and working as quickly and as safely as possible to clear Township roads and surfaces, but residents and visitors should be prepared to wait longer than usual to have roads cleared.  
• If you have a fireplace or wood stove, have ample firewood and kindling available to stay warm. 
• Stock up on extra fuel for generators and snow blowers. 
• It is never safe to operate a generator or barbeque indoors, including inside a garage or shed. 
• Residents who live on private roads are responsible for arranging maintenance and clearing.
