Seguin Township unveiled a new crosswalk on Humphrey Drive this morning, featuring a design inspired by submissions to a youth art contest in Wasauksing First Nation. The crosswalk connects the public school to the community centre and is a popular route in Humphrey Village.
The orange and white design features figures participating in a traditional ‘offering’ ceremony.
Two other crosswalk designs were also painted over the last couple of days – one on McKaig Road in Seguin and one on Parry Island in Wasauksing First Nation, with an additional two scheduled to be stenciled in the spring.
“Working together with Seguin staff, on an initiative they approached Wasauksing about was a welcome continuation of the relationship building between our communities,” says Ryan Tabobondung, Director of Public Works for Wasauksing First Nation. “The school students provided inspiring designs, and the fact we can see these designs for years to come is a tribute to all students both here and in the spirit world.”
Seguin Township says the project is an excellent way to celebrate culture, create beautiful spaces, improve safety, and encourage active transportation.
“The whole process of bringing this idea to life has been terrific,” says Tom MacLeod, Director of Public Works for Seguin Township. “From seeing the impressive artwork that the kids submitted, to working through the logistics with our counterparts in Public Works at Wasauksing First Nation, we’re really proud of how it’s all come together.”
