High speed internet is coming to an estimated 606 homes and businesses along Turtle Lake and Star Lake Roads, to the town of Orrville in Seguin Township. Cogeco will begin installation this November, filling a service gap that has been amplified since the onset of the pandemic, as more people relocated to the region and many have been working and attending school virtually.
“This is a thrilling milestone for our community,” says Seguin Mayor Ann MacDiarmid. “Fibre internet access levels the playing field for so many working and living in our beautiful township; this is a future-proof solution that will significantly enhance quality of life here.”
The project has been in the works for the last two years. All residents in this targeted area will have access to download speeds of up to one gigabyte, providing internet service comparable to that found in Ontario’s major urban centres. The project will bring new fibre infrastructure along Turtle and Star Lake Roads. Orrville residents with existing coaxial Cogeco connections will also have access to one gigabyte download speed. The project is slated to be completed by March 2022.
"Reliable high speed internet is now more important than ever. That is why I am proud to announce that we will be extending our world class fibre network in Seguin Township with support from the Federal Government" says Matt Wickham, Vice President and General Manager for Cogeco Ontario. "Thanks to our continued investments, we are able to reduce the digital divide between urban and rural areas in Ontario and drive economic growth, which is crucial for the communities we serve."
The project is estimated to cost $2.2 million and has been made possible thanks to a $715,000 contribution from Cogeco and a $1.5 million investment from the federal government’s Universal Broadband Fund. The funding also allows for affordable access for township residents with a one-time $99 installation fee and monthly fees starting at $89.
MacDiarmid says this initiative marks the beginning of a shift in the region. “The benefits of this investment are outstanding, from helping isolated individuals to stay in touch with family and medical support, to keeping professionals connected while working remotely. Cogeco and Seguin will continue to explore further options to expand fibre connectivity throughout Seguin.”
