Update Regarding Building Permits and Inspections
Seguin Building Department will continue to receive, process and issue building permits in-line with the Provincial government's mandate to allow essential services to continue operations.
Inspections for these projects will still be performed with a modified inspection procedure. Inspectors will take precautions to protect themselves and workers while performing their duties. the inspector may ask that the building be temporarily vacated during the inspection. Covid-19 Information Regarding Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF)
The Seguin Building Department has been made aware that MNRF review times are longer than usual due to the unique circumstances created by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Hours of Operation
The Municipal office remains open for business however, the office is closed to the public for precautionary and safety reasons. If you wish to meet with a member of building department staff, please call (705) 732-4300 or email building@seguin.ca to book an appointment.
Building Department Services and Inspections
As a homeowner, you may be planning to construct a new building, construct an addition or renovate an existing building but, before any construction can begin, you will need to ensure that you have obtained the required permits. Building Permits are required for new buildings, renovations and additions including, but not limited to; adding a room, finishing the basement, building a garage, remodeling the interior of your house or replacing a deck.
Please note: The Ontario Building Code is the standard for the Township of Seguin. In addition, certain local controls have been adopted to ensure the orderly development of the Municipality.
Building By-law
If you are planning to upgrade your property, you will need to follow the requirements of Building By-law 2019-031 as well as the relevant provincial acts and regulations. Remember that before any construction work begins, you must obtain a permit.
3 Step Process
Obtaining a Building Permit in Seguin is a 3 Step Process. By following the 3 steps, you will greatly enhance the efficiency of obtaining a Building Permit. It is the Township of Seguin's goal to issue Building Permits in the most expeditious manner possible.
- Ensure compliance with all Zoning By-laws
- Ensure Compliance With all Other Applicable Law
- Ensure Compliance with the Ontario Building Code
Dock and Boathouse Permit Requirements Update
Effective June 1, 2017 the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) is no longer requiring approvals in the form of Land Use Permits and work permits for docks or boathouses unless the proposed project fits one of the following descriptions;
- The dock will be supported on a new crib structure that occupies 15m² or more of the lake bed (shore lands). A work permit from the MNRF is required.
- A crib structure occupying 15m² or more of the lake bed will be completely removed. A work permit from the MNRF is required.
- Any 1.5 storey boathouse that contains human habitation. A Land Use Permit from the MNRF is required.
In addition to the MNRF requirements above, any dock/boathouse that exceeds 10m² in area requires a building permit from the Township of Seguin. Any required MNRF approvals must be in place before a building permit can be issued. If you have any questions, please contact the Building Department at the Township of Seguin office to discuss.
