New grant funding expands Cogeco high-speed internet services in Seguin

Another $5.9 million has been allocated towards improving internet connectivity in Seguin Township.  These funds come jointly from the Federal Universal Broadband Fund (UBF), the Provincial Improving Connectivity for Ontario Fund (ICON) and a Cogeco Connexion contribution.

Cogeco will be installing fibre to approximately 750 Seguin homes and businesses in the areas of Port Cockburn, Hamer Bay, Gordon Bay and Stanley House. “Fibre is the most reliable, future-proof form of connectivity available today and will ensure that our businesses and residents have dependable, scalable internet access that is equal to their urban counterparts,” says Ann MacDiarmid, mayor of Seguin Township.

“The allocation of these funds further illustrates the Province of Ontario’s interest and commitment to support growth in rural areas and northern Ontario.  This announcement follows on the heels of grants already provided by our government to support the Parry Sound Area Municipal Airport and Business Park expansion and to build the Parry Sound Area wellness centre,” says Norman Miller, MPP.  “Seguin and the Parry Sound area are growing, and we are continuing to invest in this growth.”

Cogeco will lay fibre along roads and use submarine cable in Lake Joseph to ensure connectivity.  Construction is expected to begin in spring 2022 and is estimated to be completed by November 2023. Access to homes and businesses located on private roads will be offered by Cogeco on a case-by-case basis and interested residents should contact Cogeco directly when the project begins.

“At Cogeco, we are committed to expanding our services to unserved and underserved Ontarians throughout the province. We are proud to continue to connect more homes and businesses in Seguin Township to Cogeco’s world-class fibre network. These investments, in partnership with the federal and provincial governments, are crucial to driving economic recovery and prosperity in the communities we serve,” says Matt Wickham, Cogeco’s vice president and general manager for Ontario.

This project is the latest in a series of initiatives that will help to boost connectivity throughout Seguin, including: a recently-announced Cogeco project offering fibre to 600 homes along Turtle and Star Lake Roads to Orrville; Lakeland Networks wireless upgrades in the Orrville area; increased Wireless Home Internet (WHI) by Bell; and a wireless project by Vianet that is projected to begin in early 2022. Seguin council says it remains committed to establishing robust connectivity for all homes and businesses throughout the township.
